DENVER—On Sunday, July 1st, legislation expanding a program to help veterans transition from military service into the civilian workforce will go into effect. House Bill 18-1343, sponsored by Representative Terri Carver (R-Colorado Springs), continues the Veterans’ Service to Career Program, and expands it to include active-duty members who are within six months of their retirement.
Carver, a 29-year veteran who retired as a colonel, issued the following statement ahead of the bill going into effect:
“Following a successful pilot, I am very excited to extend and expand the Veterans’ Service to Career Program. Veterans leave military service with invaluable experience, and this program helps them adapt their skillset to fit many of the skilled-labor jobs that are in high-demand in Colorado. Giving veterans more career opportunities and increasing Colorado’s skilled labor workforce is a win-win for our state’s economy.”
Specifically, the program provides training, internship placement, and other career services that can improve veterans’ professional opportunities.
The initial pilot program, created in 2016, awarded grants to the Arapahoe-Douglas Workforce Center, the El Paso County Workforce Center, the Mt. Carmel Center of Excellence and the Larimer County Workforce Center.
The bill requires the workforce centers and non-profit agencies applying for the grants to demonstrate that their services will not duplicate federal services, and among other requirements, how their services will accommodate participants that are experiencing homelessness or struggling with addiction.
House Bill 18-1343 passed with strong bipartisan support in both chambers and was signed by the governor on May, 24th.
